Clinical Experiences and Sites

Students progress sequentially through a series of clinical experiences and site placements as they grow in knowledge, skills, autonomy, and leadership.

The clinical education portion of the MAT program includes simulations, live patient interactions, and standardized patients. These experiences span the duration of the 2-year curriculum. Students earn academic credit for these learning experiences for GMAT 590, GMAT 591, GMAT 692, GMAT 693, GMAT 694. All clinical experiences and immersions occur under the direct supervision of an athletic trainer or physician. Students are guaranteed a variety of clinical sites in collegiate (海角直播 and at least one other university), high school, and clinical settings among a variety of patient demographics like individual and team sports, gender, lifespan and culture.

Summer I: The first summer in the MAT program students are not yet assigned to clinical sites and do not interact with live patients. The term is aimed at providing simulated experiences and preparing for the first clinical assignment in the fall semester. Students will participate in a pre-season experience after completing GMAT 510, but these patient encounters and clinical hours will count toward fulfilling GMAT 590 requirements in Fall I.

Fall I: During the first fall semester in the MAT program students are enrolled in GMAT 590. Students will complete two 8-week clinical rotations. First-year students are also paired with second-year students who serve as their peer-mentor to assist with the transition to the new environment and expectations.

Spring I: In GMAT 591, students again participate in two 8-week clinical rotations, but they gain more independence as they will no longer have a peer-mentor.

Summer II: The second summer session clinical class, GMAT 692, is unique because students will complete two 5-week observation-based experiences in out-patient orthopedic offices. Students may have the opportunity to observe orthopedic surgeries as part of this interprofessional experience.

Fall II: In GMAT 693, clinical experiences last the full duration of the 16-week semester and the student will now be the peer-mentor for at least one GMAT 590 student.

Spring II: During the final semester in the MAT program students are enrolled in GMAT 694. This is a clinical immersion course. This unique experience is designed to expose students to the “totality” of daily athletic training professional responsibilities. Students will engage in full-time, preceptor-supervised patient care in a setting of their choosing. Students may elect to go anywhere in the country for this experience and will search for sites/preceptors just as they would when searching for a job. International opportunities may be available for interested students.

While our clinical sites rotations are based on the professional and experiential needs of the students, our common sites and preceptors over the last several years include:
